That's sad in more ways than one. He was such an influence on the modern music scene, without him you wouldn't have had rap His use of poetry set to the beat of music is the blueprint which everyone followed. It's sad that he could not get rid of his drug demons, which seem like they consumed him in the end.

It did consume him. He was a BIG influence. He could write some sweet songs and some tough ones too. I guess his biggest hit was "Your Daddy Loves You."

Tuskegee 626, Shut'em Down, Johannesburg, We Almost Lost Detroit. An iron fist covered by that velvet voice.
Lovely Day. Still one of my favorite songs ever.
"The flowers woke up bloomin'
And put on a color show just for me
The shadows dark and gloomy
I told them all to keep the hell away from me"
RIP.

[sarcasm] No rap? Wouldn't that be tragic...[/sarcasm]
I enjoyed his music during my college years. I still have a couple CD's hanging around but I don't think I've listened to them in twenty years.

He was a strong contributor to Musician's United for Safe Energy (MUSE) in the early 80's. Saw many anti-nuke concerts with GSH.
His voice is needed again today.

So sad. He had a lot more to say, I think. He put out a pretty solid solo album last year and I really enjoyed the collaboration he did with Jaime from The XX which came out a few months ago.
