You do not have to use it.
You can have it enabled and have specific categories disabled from syncing. Since many people will not want to pay for over 5GB of storage, many will still want (and I would recommend if they use them much) to at least sync the Contacts and Calendar appointments.

I like the Cloud. As long as I can keep a copy of everything locally.

Of all the new stuff in iOS 5 (excluding Siri which won't run on my iPhone), "Find My Friends" is the only one that looks especially useful to me... and because it's just an app that uses the same frameworks as "Find My iPhone" there's absolutely no need to install iOS 5 or to sign up for iCloud services in order to activate it.
Therefore, Apple requires that every user of "Find My Friends" must run iOS 5 and be an iCloud user.
Blah.

So, we can turn Cloud off (or not enable it in the first place) and our current method of syncing still works as always, true?
Kate, are you concerned the Cloud will slow down your current sync expectations? Or about Apple's reliability, anticipating problems or interruptions? Or just prefer not to have Apple's servers get involved in your business? Those are all valid concerns. I'm just curious what has you uneasy about the upcoming service?

It would be interesting to see if the benefits of the Cloud are seductive enough to draw in seasoned users who already manage a local version of similar services, between their macs and devices.
The idea of documents-in-progress, and downloaded songs, and iPhone photos, etc., automatically appearing each of my computers and devices sounds appealing. Since it could save me the hassle of dropping files to this or that one, manually, or emailing myself a photo, or a song, which is a pain in the ass. I have an iPhone, three macs, an iPad, etc., so the convenience could be useful for a user like me. Or not. I'm not sure 'till I try it.
Does my stuff really have to go out to "the Cloud" (over the internet, to Apple's servers) in order for it to move to a different device in my house, only 20 feet away? And why?

It really bugs me that the media and ill-informed have jumped on casting the Creepy pall on this app.
A window can be set to make it temporary, and the Findee has an O-N/O-F-F switch.
The iOS requirement doesn't bother me, and though I may use iCloud, having to have it for Find My Friends does, a little.

My concern is bandwidth. I have a mifi and a HughesNet satellite dish. The mifi is unlimited, but I don't expect that to last. The Hughes is limited to 375mb a day.
I worry about how much bandwidth I'll use uploading and downloading to the cloud.

Kate, thanks. I thought your concern was bandwidth in terms of the Apple service side, rather than getting your concern that it's a usage issue on your side.
