My first was a PowerMac 7300 in 1997. I knew very little about computers and was worried about spending so much money: $3k for the Mac and Applevision display + Photoshop and Freehand software. I'm really glad I took that first plunge.

I'm with Jamie. What's all this about the Apple II when the question was about Macs?
![]() (OK, you are all forgiven. We know what was meant.) First Apple computer I used was an Apple II at an internship in France in 1982. Boy was VisiCalc cool! Got a 512k Macintosh ("Fat Mac" ) and ImageWriter with education discount in 1984 in graduate school. Both are still down in the basement. Thought about doing the Macintosh Plus upgrade to it, but never got around to that. Had an external floppy drive too. I'm pretty sure either the internal or external drive were upgraded to handle 800k disks at some point. Mac Plus Upgrade (history) http://www.mac512.com/macwebpages/plusupkit.htm - Winston

Apple IIe with not one but two, TWO(!) floppy drives
And an Imagewriter(?) for all of my dot matrix thrills. It also came with a free 10-speed bike (Apple branded, I believe) and an Apple painters cap which were "the" hat style for 1983/84.

PowerMac 6100/60 8MB RAM, 250MB HD. Really wanted to get the Performa version with the built-in CD-ROM but CompUSA didn't have any so we bought the Apple Multimedia Kit which included the Apple 300e SCSI 2x CD-ROM and the Apple Speakers. Apple 15" Multiple Scan CRT monitor. Ran it at 640x480 with millions of colors most of the time but did experiment with 800x600 with only thousands of colors on occasion.
Really wanted to get the DOS compatibility card too, but I'm glad I never did. Upgraded the RAM within a few months from the original 8MB to 16MB for a couple hundred $ I think. Maxed it out to 72MB a few years later when SIMMs were cheap. I got so into computers and technology because of that computer; learned so much which in turn got me to where I am today. Apple truly did change my life.

The first Mac I used was a 512k. I worked at what I'm guessing was one of the first places to rent out Macs by the hour. There was one location that was open 24 hours and you could find at least two or three Macs being used any time of day. There were times you could come in at 2:00 in the morning and find every computer in use.
The first Mac I owned was an SE. Eventually I added an external 20MB hard drive ($700), a 68030 accelerator and RAM in an amount you wouldn't even find in a give away thumb drive. From there I kicked around in a IIsi, a couple of LCs (I still have one of them), a IIci, a B&W smurf and a DP G5 Power Mac. I have an iPhone, but have never owned a laptop. Every single Mac I've ever used has made me feel at least a little like I was living in the future. |
