Anyone else who made their own pumpkin pies notice something different this year?

Every year, Mavis makes a couple of pumpkin pies for her family's holiday get togethers. She has been doing this for so many years that it's a no-brainer for her…

…but, this year something strange happened.

When she took the two pies out of the oven, they looked quite different than they always have in the past.

As you can see, they were a rich color and looked very appetizing.

I didn't photograph this years pies because the looked so pale, so colorless in comparison. They turned out to be an ugly looking pale beige color!

What was even more strange, Mavis was talking to one of her oldest friends, who lives in Fresno, and when she mentioned what happened to her pies, her friend said that she had the same thing happen.

We're all very puzzled about this and it has me wondering if Libby's been playing around with the pumpkin that they're using? Genetically modifying or something?

Anyway, I thought that I'd ask if anyone else noticed a difference with their pies.

Is it pumpkin pie mix or plain pumpkin? I use the plain pumpkin for my pies but it's not the standard recipe I use. This year I had Spartan brand canned pumpkin-saw no difference.

Most of cooking pumpkins are grown in one area in illinois.
They are all one same kind of pumpkin. (there are many others)
Pumpkin colour and texture are more likely influenced by growing conditions and maturity at harvest.

I find quite a variance with butternut squash from more yellow to more orange based on maturity (the plant fruits for quite a few weeks allowing for some variance there.)

Mine looked and tasted the same this year. My crust wasn't as nice looking as yours, however. Did yours taste any different?

It was plain pumpkin and I can't really tell about any taste difference. It's been a year since I last had a taste of Mavis' pumpkin pie. I also think that the pie's appearance influenced how it tasted to me.

All I can tell you is that after many years of perfect pies, it seemed very strange to me that this happened. :dunno:

I guess it will remain a mystery.
