question for the ebay experts
#1
I had an auction close with the winning bidder being from another country. The only shipping options on the auction were for U.S. addresses. I assumed that would keep foreigners from bidding but obviously not.

I don't want to ship internationally for a number of reasons but mostly because I don't want to have to deal with customs.

Can I cancel the transaction because as the seller I don't "ship to" the winners country? And can I do that without repercussion?

Thanks.

Refund payment with noted reason and request a mutual end option on the auction. If payment has not been made, tell the person you won't ship. I don't mess with international anymore. Too much extra hassle if something goes wrong. With the way eBay favors the buyer, most problems will be you problems.

Agree with above.

Also, check your selling settings, you can prevent international bidders from even seeing your item. Or the opposite, you can make your item visible only to accounts with addresses registered in the States.

Technically, if an ebayer has access to your sale, they have a right to bid on it. You have a right to block them from your sale, but if you don't and they buy it, you will be open to receiving negative feedback for backing out of the deal.

You can request the cancellation. If the buyer does not respond, or agrees, then it'll be cancelled. If the buyer does not agree, then the sale stands; your fees won't be refunded and you are expected to ship the thing. The only repercussion is the possibility of bad feedback.

To avoid, be sure to set the 'Buyer Requirements" to block buyers who "Have a primary shipping address in countries that I don't ship to" when you set up the sale.

You can also set paypal to block payments based on accounts that are not drawing US dollars.

Thanks, Hal.

Some of the details I would like to keep out of the public for now so I sent you a PM.

BTW, I couldn't block the winner because it was a snipe.

What does that have to do with anything? See the previous post about 'buyer requirements'. He could have been blocked along with everyone else in his country so he would not have been able to bid - snipe or otherwise...

Oh, in addition to the Buyer Requirements, I thought you meant canceling a bid or blocking a specific bidder.

As far as customs go, there's an extra form or two, with a place to declare the value, but as a seller that's all you have to do. Customs and duties are paid by the buyer when it gets there. His problem, not yours.
