Adding memory to a MBP question *(:>*
#1
What is the consensus on adding 12GB to a 2011 Model MBP
1 module@4GB and 1 module@8GB

I see that OWC sells this combo. Has anyone done this ?
TIA for you help & advice,
Rudie

Don't stop at 12GB.

Memory cheap, or at least it was. Go for 16GB, $150 now. Best I've seen was $110.

MBP likes 16GB. :-)

Edit: Looks like Fry's has it again for $110...

Cheap MBP RAM

It's Corsair Value Select, which means you may or may not get the good stuff because *they* do the value selecting prior to packaging... If you get the good stuff; you're fine. If you get something less, you may be fine, if it works and stays working- terrific; if not, you gotta call Corsair and piss, bitch and moan till they send you the good stuff, which they eventually will, so there may be some hassle involved. Most the reviews online are positive, so I get the sense they don't try to pass off too much less than good stuff, but I have no clue as to what the real life percentages are.

Yup, I ordered me some of that Value Select stuff from Amazon $111 shipped for 16gb

I don't think there's any sense in 12gb. If the budget doesn't reach 16, just buy one 8gb stick and you'll have 10 until some future day when you can get another 8. That day will come sooner with the $ not wasted on the 4

Thanks for your advice guys . . . I will wait and see if there are any silent upgrades, as a very wise friend suggested.

Yep, you'll probably get he full 16GB RAM, but only a 256GB SSD as silent upgrades... especially since Apple only officially supports 8GB RAM, you're gonna have to sign a NDA for the silent RAM upgrade, and only declare it as 8GB here, and everywhere else. The SSD will just be freakin' cool. Since you'll order the high res screen, they may have to give you a pre-release Retina 3360 X 2100 display, also of course subject to the NDA for your silent upgrade. You're gonna make all the MRF'er's jealous w/ all those silent upgrades. Enjoy! :-)
