The 5D3 and D800 seem to be shipping at a decent rate and I am seeing their replacements drop in price.
A quick glance shows the 5D starting around $600. The 5D Mark 2 is staring around $1400.
The D700 is going around $1500. The once mighty $7k D3X is now hovering around $4k and expected to drop more due to the D800 crazy increase in resolution.
Now websites might tell you that old tech is ____ and _____ and not worth it bit I have some huge prints made from 12mp cams that look just fine. A 5D 12mp at $600 allows for money left over for lenses. Then wait a year and get a price dropped Mark 2.
Now if you shoot low light sports/action then the 5D and 5D Mar II are not going to keep up. If you are already locked into Canon, a 1D Mar 2 or Mark 3 would be better for low light action. The D700 AF keeps up just fine as long as you have Silent Wave lenses and not the old pin motor lenses.

I looked at the 5dmiii at some stores here.
€3300 ( >$4300 ).
So the whole "maybe the price is high because of the exchange rate" theory is bunk. It's a bargain in the US!
Edit: And yes, that is the "Body Only" price.

Saw the 5d2 refurb via slickdeals for $1500 and was about to jump on it, but was sold out. Probably better since I don't need one. But I have the silky smooth 85 f/1.8 and I kinda want a full frame sensor to go with it

I shot some stuff with my D2h and SB800 flash the other day. As long as there is some light, I can do okay with it.

Full frame with shallow depth of field is a beautiful thing. The $1500 was the Canon direct refurb and that thing was out of stock before the deal was posted. Canon also charges tax and shipping.
The prices will continue to drop as 5D Mark 3 ship in mass. I am guessing we'll see $1200 used Mark 2 in a month or two.

Yep, my 1D MkIIN still beats the pants off a 5D MkII in low-light and AF speed.
I'll upgrade to a 5D MkIII this year since the AF is finally the same as the 1D.

The main reason the 5d mark 2 sold as well as it did was the 1080p full frame video mode to allow fr shallow depth f field. The 22mp helped ove the d700. The 5d mark 2 af was is woeful. The nice thing is the 5d3 has the 1dx af system the latest and best canon has to offer with multiple cross sensors. The 5d mark 2 af was from a system that was already 5 or 6 years old when introduced. Canon was lucky that nikon was so slow to counter and the video mode was in demand. Nikon let the 5d mark 2 full frame 35mm sized sensor a 1080p go unchallenged for 3 years. Yes the d3s had full frame 35mm video but it was 720p and $5500 and in short supply.
5d2 is fine for most things, just don't try to shoot low light action with it while using shallow depth of field.
