Marketing Lesson: Fastest way to lose ALL your customers Right NOW !!!
#1
I received an unsolicited and unwanted Text message from a Chrysler dealership that recently fixed my wife's minivan (the POS Minivan I've complained about herein).

Did I authorize them to send me SPAM in the service contract I signed ? No. I did not.

Did I specifically give them my cell number so they could market to me with their 'coupon' offer ?
No. I did not.

That didn't stop them.

They got a VERY Angry phone call that sounded a bit like this:

"Good morning. This is cbelt3. I WAS a customer of yours until a minute ago, when I received an unsolicited text message from your e-marketing system. Are you people complete idiots ? Do you realize you've just annoyed EVERY single one of your customers that has a cell phone ? No ? Well I suggest you FIRE whatever marketing MORON that did that, send letters apologizing to your customers that you spammed, and HOPE that they forgive you.

Because I will NOT.

Goodbye."

cbelt3,

I rarely text and refuse to spend the bucks for a texting plan, so unsolicited texts bug the heck out of me. In your situation, you were able to identify and contact the spammer. I'd've done the same. Unfortunately, in my case, the SPAM texts I get are from someone (or company) trying to give me a free iphone for testing or some other such nonsense. Giving them some unsolicited marketing advice is impossible because there is no way to contact them. They use a bogus number for the text. GRRR!

They'll probably respond with a text message apology along with and offer for $5 off an oil change at their service department.

You mean you didn't tell them that they'd better not contact you by any means unless they screwed up the repair and your life was in danger?

Obviously I get a lot of odd looks, people think I'm a crank (which is not out of the realm of possibility) but my philosophy is "Don't call me, I'll call you". When I get some of this, the first thing I do is contact somebody as high up as I can (the owner of the dealership is a good example, or the zone office for the manufacturer) and my first question "Did I tell you to call me?" then when they start with the alibis I keep saying "I don't understand though, I didn't tell you to call me."

I've claimed to be a day sleeper and asked for their numbers so I could contact them at 3:00 in the morning.

They only make that mistake with me once.

Me too.

Then again, I'm a vampire.

I also warn them that I'll bite them.

The real problem is that the bailout caused all the horrible ones to close, leaving the landscape open for the just awful ones. We used to have more options. The loss of dealerships caused the competition to reduce. So now all the Chrysler dealers in my area (to whom I can go for service) just don't care. They're like the cable TV companies. Local monopolies.

Bastiches.

Actually, I'm guessing that for the most part, only their customers over a certain age, say 25.

As married at the hip to their phones as a lot of younger people are, they probably just shrug stuff like this off. It's just another form of white noise for them.

I refused to pay ATT for a texting plan. After getting a half dozen BS texts from co-workers (that cost me $0.20 each), I had ATT block ALL texts. I then picked up a TextFree+Voice account when that App was free. Only three people have that number. I find intrusive texts especially infuriating as a text message costs a carrier less than a voice call. There should be a discount for people who utilize text service, not a surcharge.
