Got to wondering after reading jdc's rant/vent below.
I often here about the cheaper price of fuel, compared to us here in the UK, that you lot have in the US but of course running costs for cars are more than just the fuel you put in them and the figure jdc said for his total insurance seemed high compared to my premiums. I've just had a quick look and my total insurance comes to less than £650 or just over $1000. This covers full buildings and contents on a 5 bedroomed detached house (current value about £450,000) and fully comprehensive insurance on a Honda Accord, a Ford Ka, a VW Campervan and a Maserati 430.
Age and area will obviously vary the premiums, what do you pay? To keep it non political we can leave out health insurance.

House and possessions (approx $400,000) plus 1/2 $M liability, four vehicles (2008 Caravan, and three old and busted reprobates), three drivers.. Approx. $2,000 per annum.
Can you send me your agent's telly number ?

about $1100 for home insurance and two cars and a motorcycle for $1400 or a bit less. I can reduce the moto bill by $250 if I want to eliminate the extra medical I have, but I always thought doing so would lead to instant bad luck on two wheels.

I just left my longtime insurance agency (USAA) after realizing that I could get more insurance for about 50% of the cost by shopping around. Premiums for insuring 2 cars and a house was costing me almost $4k/annually. I just signed on with a new insurance company and reduced that bill by almost half.

Paul-
not sure how they calculate on your side of the pond, but hereabouts they zots you by where you live...
same stuff a county over, or sometimes just a few zip codes away can be massive differential in premium.
With cars, a bunch of points for accidents and tickets will ream you, but again it's geographically dependent.
Basically they charge you a premium on the premium for living in a more premium area... the closer it is to a premium metropolitan area.
Build a castle in the boonies w/ nice cars, and nice stuff, insurance is cheap.
A hovel w/ moped in San Francisco will cost you more.
Rants are justified.

Having one 19 year old male on the policy, no accidents or tickets, living away at college mostly without a car, adds $1,800 per year to our auto policy. (Progressive)
We can drop him on a monthly basis and re-add him as needed, but it requires that he remember that he's not an insured driver while at school.
