but this very machine I'm using right now, a 2011 model has no problem with 16gb at all. I image the 2012 line would be fine with it too.

16GB is plenty for most, if not all, laptop users.
It certainly should be for me. My mini has 8G and I still get beachballs from time to time. Slower everything than the new MacBooks, of course.
RAM is less critical if you have an SSD, especially the super fast new SSD from Samsung.

I've decided to hold off until I can get a "standard" MBP with a Retina display. But I want 16G o' RAM, so this is all good news. And an SSD or two is definitely in the not too distant future.
