F/U:F/U:Abysmal WiFi on Core Duo Mini
#1
Resolution finally on the poor WiFi on my shop Core Duo Mini, beaten to death on these two threads:

first one

F/U

To spare you the boring details, I'd had a G5 iMac in my detached garage workshop with Wifi from a Dlink DI-624 router. It was pretty reliable but REALLY slow. I needed an Intel Mac for some new apps, so I put our Core Duo mini out there, and had endless dropped connections, couldn't find the router, etc. Folks here made suggestions (thanks!). Lots of things helped for a short time, including changing channels, upgrading the card in the mini to an n-type, as well as adding another antenna. Replaced the router with a Cisco/Linksys E2500. But still no joy.

Now, after two weeks of joy, I think I can report success. It streams YT full screen without a hiccup, no dropped connections, even after sleep. 5 GHz works, so the connection doesn't drop when the microwave goes on. The solution was dumping the cheapo router and getting the ASUS RT-N66R refurb for $119 that priceCube posted a few weeks ago. Works like a charm. With no other changes, it's as good as having a wired connection. No more bargain routers for me.

Not all the advice helped directly but it all helped steer me to a resolution, so Thanks!

I was at a client's today whose office is in a garage, detached from his house.

The Cisco router is in the front part (office), and his Mac Mini server is in his parts room on the other side of a cement block wall.

When i moved my MBP from the desk by the Mini to the front office, the WiFi strength went from 50% to 80%.

Did I mention the Mini connects via WiFi? :banghead:
