Cisco VPN error 51; Already googled and tried some fixes. No go.

I would like to get the Cisco VPN client running on this MBP. I remember I had the same issues some 2-3 years ago in 10.4 on a PBG4. Now I am on a MBP 10.6.8. I keep getting Error 51


I already tried "sudo SystemStarter restart CiscoVPN" as seen on some google hits. No change. What else can I try?

but I don't think I have all the passwords needed to connect to corporate using the OS X VPN (some passwords are already hidden into the Cisco profiles they provide at work)

Go into your Network preferences and click the plus icon to create a new network service. Select the VPN option from the menu and then choose Cisco/IPSec from the next menu.

Fill in the info for your VPN and don't forget to click the "Authentication Settings" button and fill in that stuff, too.

If you're missing the shared secret or your network password, get those from your IT department. It's their job to support you when stuff like this happens.

If you insist on using that g-dawful Cisco client applet then try this: Open the Java Preferences application, click the General tab and look to see whether you have both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Java installed. If so, click and drag to place the 32-bit version above the 64-bit version... Then click the Network tab and click the button to delete cache files. This may help, but no promises.

Chak is right on.

I'll expand, the Cisco VPN client won't run on the newer 64 bit Apple hardware. It isn't the OS version that made it stop working, it is the hardware. Any of the 2011+ models don't work with the client

The work around, as previously stated, is to setup the VPN using System Preferences:Network.

I tried to restart in 32 bit mode, I am not sure if I was in fact running 32 bit (how do you check?), and Cisco VPN still didn't work.

I tried changing the Java 32 and Java 64 order as suggested, flushed the cache, still no joy.

Then I used the crack found here and now I believe that I have all the info I need, I connect to the server but it won't take my password. I keep getting the same dialog box again 3x, then it quits.

Will keep trying.

You shouldn't have to "crack" your own password.

Are you authorized to login via VPN? If so, then contact your IT department and request your credentials (username, password, shared secret) for the VPN. If they're any good, they should drop you an email with everything you need detailed in it.

yeah Chak, will contact IT, although they don't officially support Macs (but most everyone in IT has Macs at home LOL)

Meanwhile my MIL has an older MacBook (MacBook5,2) which runs 10.5.8 and I got the Cisco VPN working on it.

That makes sense. It's a crummy Java applet that they haven't updated in years. It's probably not compatible with Java 6, which you'll find in Snow Leopard and Leopard.
