FWIW, The mothership said the local Genius manager COULD do it if they wanted. The Genius manager told me they weren't empowered to make exceptions, but the home office says different.

If anyone is still following this thread, I got a call today that it has been repaired and is awaiting pickup at the A.S. The charge is $310 + tax.

I will see if I can get Apple Customer Relations to comp the repair before I go to pick it up. Wish me luck.
