Maybe with conventional LCD backlights there's probably not that big of a difference but with the LED backlights in most of the current LCDs I think the difference is significant.

Modern CRTs? Who is making cathode ray tubes these days?

You can't really compare even a high end CRT to a good, modern LCD panel in terms of image. The thin iMac looks good and I saw the center bulge when Phil S. turned it on stage during the event.

Even the previous generation iMacs were far less deep in size than a comparable CRT. Plus you'd have to find space for the CPU...

Let's face it, the Mac designs of late are much easier on the eyes than than standard LCDs, like the cheap plastic LGs my company put on our desks. They work OK but for my home I prefer a little style.
