Great Aussie movie that isn't well known over here... The Sapphires

The Sapphires: 6.9 at IMDB http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1673697/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

A fun story (based on truth) about 4 aboriginal girls in rural Australia see an ad looking for talent to perform for the american boys fighting in vietnam. With the help of a down and out soul music nutcase, they turn themselves into an awesome 60's girl group and head out to nam.

It's fun, it's corny (aussies are big on corny) and it's got some GREAT girl group covers - mostly NOT the most widely known songs, but some real good ones.

Lots of interesting side stories... a really fun movie. It was absolutely gigantic in Australia - it swept the Australian Film Institute awards (Best Film, Direction, Screenplay, Cinematography, Actor, Actress, Sup Actress). I'm surprised that it hasn't made a good run in the US. It opened in the spring, but I guess it didn't take off.
