iPhone5 Is Worst Of The Top Smartphones: Consumer Reports

2) The wifi strength indicates that it is weaker when I am upstairs as compared to the 4S. This may be meaningless, since the 5/iOS6 may have just changed the way the wifi strength is indicated. I never upgraded the 4S to iOS6.

My 4 had WiFi with varying strength in our living room where I used it. My 5 gets no WiFi. Sucks.

How about this scenario, I have a bunch of computers which can only upgrade to Lion. How do I go about buying Lion for those machines? Point me to the official Apple upgrade path. If you don't find one, could you go ahead an pay the freight to get me a half dozen new computers in order for me to have a version of Mac OS which still receives bug fixes and security updates?

Buy 10.6 DVD (actual version is 10.6.3) from Apple Store, $20

Call Apple and aks for a download code for Lion, last I heard they still allowed you to download it, but only if you called. Not sure if it's $20 or $29.

If that is true (which I certainly agree with) then CR should not rank them or show meaningless scores. They should instead aggregate them into meaningful categories. There are a lot of folks out there who will blindly buy the phone with the highest "score", unaware that the weighting that CR gives each feature is completely made up and often meaningless. This is why CR is such a crappy arbiter of quality for so many products.

Pretty much spot on about CR and M$ (including the use of M$).

What does CR say about the difficulty in upgrading most Android phones? The user is dependant on the mfg modifying each Android release for each device. Then the carrier takes this and modifies it again. I've got a company issued 1 yr old Android device that I can't update because Samsung hasn't issued an update for it. Its stuck at 2.x.

What phone do you have? 2 point something is Gingerbread. That's old.
Some POS Samsung device. I only use it when I travel internationally as my company won't reimburse international use on my iPhone. So, they pay $55+/month/year so that I have a device for the 3 international trips I do a year. Not really worried about the device as we get new ones each year, so I've got a few months to go.

As for updates, I check regularly thru the phone and online thru Tmobile and Samsung. If it was my own device, I'd download 4.x that has been modded to run on my device. But, it points out how Apple did it right by controlling the experience.

I came out of a 3GS. I like my 5. It was not life changing as promoted, but it is nice. My iPad 4 is similar. Not an earth shattering upgrade from my iPad 1, as was pitched, but a nice upgrade.

Yeah, wouldn't a bit of intelligent debate go a lot further?

I already have Snow Leopard and in fact bought Lion for this just in case scenario. I didn't know you could still update to Lion*. Thanks for the heads up on Snow Leopard still being sold, I have a client still on 10.5.

*Here's a post describing the type of experience some people received after calling Apple:
" It is a well-kept secret, apparently even from Apple employees. Be prepared for explaining. I went through 7 Apple representatives, during 4 phone calls before getting someone who knew what was going on and could handle this order correctly. Also, be prepared to wait. I received an order confirmation immediately, but it took a day to receive the email with the download information."

Having read more than a few accounts of Apple telling people they could not upgrade to Lion after Mountain Lion shipped, I was a bit concerned. Good to know you just have to be persistent. Here's the link for how to upgrade to Lion.

Apple ending the sale of Lion when SL shipped was perhaps the most ridiculous thing Apple has done in a long while.

They were consistent with iWork, too - in the end, I had to buy a DVD installer for my sister who was running 10.6 but couldn't download Pages from the Mac App Store. Once she installed from the DVD, she could upgrade to the same software from the store.

Sorry, Mr Cook - some of us don't have the cash to update our machines every couple years.
