cracking walnuts

Do I win the prize for most off topic post of the day? :-)

A friend of mine has a walnut tree and is complaining about all the walnuts on his lawn. My wife eats walnuts on her oatmeal every day and they are very expensive. You see my evil plan forming? I have two questions. One, is it ok to pickup walnuts off the ground and eat them? I'm not aware of the health issues. Two, I don't think my hands could deal with the old style walnut cracker. What kind of tool would I need to crack a fairly large amount of walnuts? Thanks.

The walnuts will be fine if they haven't been on the ground too long. You'll be able to tell anyway, when you open them. Try vicegrips, set to an opening that just cracks the shell open.

If you're not going to crack them right away you need to dry them, otherwise the shells will get moldy. One year i put some in a laundry basket and set it in front of the fireplace, I stirred it up about once a day and it worked very well.

Also a brick and a hammer work well for cracking large amounts.
