Stressful few weeks... Remote Access
#1
On July 3rd, my father passed after suffering from a stroke 5 days prior. Unfortunate as there was a lot of miles left on that 72 year old. However, his life took a different course. He will be greatly missed by me, family, and friends. He had an amazing memorial service.

My dad had a User Name here, but I have no idea what it was since he rarely left a post. When he had an issue, he usually leaned on me to post his questions. I will have to figure out what the Screen Name was when I get a chance. He and were tied together playing with all this Apple Computer gear (iPads, iPhones, Airport Extreme and Expresses, Apple TV, MBP, etc).

Mom is fairly computer savvy but will need help with this and is 400 miles away. Getting into the nuts and bolts of making this equipment sing together was Dad's hobby with me. Now, I will maintain most of their gear and help coach her on using the things she needs.

I believe I can access their computer through REMOTE ACCESS -- I have never played with Remote Access. So, will be digging into Google and Apple Support to see how all that works. If anyone has any tips to offer in this area, feel free to let me know.

Sorry for your loss. may he rest in peace.

You can use Apple iChat/Messages-Screen Share and or TeamViewer for remote access. It gives you an easy way to help your Mom.
Join.me and Skype screen share are alternatives.

About 5 years ago I buried my father with one of his Apple mouse.

Feel free to ask here for info on using it.

I'm sorry for your loss...

Presuming your remote computer is on a standard ISP (cable or telco) and has the router has a dynamic IP address that changed, once upon a time I'd set up a script that ran with iChat that merely checked and responded with that IP when it received a message from a certain user.

I think I maybe needed some kind of plugin for iChat to do that, not sure if the same framework is available for Messages these days. But if it is, you may even be able to trigger this same script to activate remote access automatically so it's not sitting on all the time.

Pah!

An easier way would likely be to use iCloud and Back to My Mac to remote in. Don't know what I was thinking, I did this so long ago it predates that feature!

Sorry to hear about your dad.

I would have said 'Logmein', but I gather Apple has equivalent options within the OS. I'm sure the gurus here can help when needed.

just use something like TeamViewer... very simple on both ends. http://www.teamviewer.com/en/index.aspx

Sorry for your loss.

Teamviewer is free for noncommercial use and is pretty seamless, but it does require each user to install and run the software.

If your mom is likely to have trouble with that then LogMeIn is a nice alternative. Install it during a visit and then take control remotely whenever you need to without the need for her to run an app.

Sorry to hear about your loss.
My dad died suddenly, almost 12 years ago, at about the same age, too early, for sure. Sad

Sorry for your loss. Apple remote works nicely if set up . Screen share via iChat can help to start things . Like others , logmein is pretty seamless.

Thanks for the warm thoughts everyone.

I have Mountain Lion on both mine and her machines. I thought iChat was gone?
