Simmons ComforPedic memory foam mattress?

Hi everyone,

My wife and I need to replace the W hotel mattress. It’s a great mattress and not that old but just not quite as comfy as it was when we bought it. In case anyone is wondering, the W Hotel mattress, like the Westin Heavenly Bed, is a modified Simmons Beautyrest classic innerspring mattress. Simmons will not replace our mattress under warranty because it isn’t sagging and such. Phooey!

We evaluated replacements and liked a couple of Sealy Posturepedic models. For giggles, we checked out memory foam mattresses, too. My wife and I are both leery of memory foam mattress but we were surprised to find a few models that are particularly comfy. They even passed the “Bounce” test! As a result, we’re considering a memory foam mattress now.

The model we like is a mid-range Simmons ComforPedic cushion firm mattress with cooling gel and other “cooling” features. We can get queen for less than $1400 delivered. This include the mattress, foundation, delivery/setup and removal of the old mattress. The price seems surprisingly fair considering memory foam mattresses can be several thousand dollars and not necessarily include all of the above.

Anyone have a Simmons ComforPedic memory foam mattress? Please share your experiences, i.e. approximate cost, length you’ve owned it, how it has changed over time, etc.

I would really like to see some sort of standard for measuring the "memory" capability. I got a memory foam topper at Costco for Xmas 2009 as a gift, so I don't have a receipt. It has degraded to a barely more compliant than the mattress non-memory foam. Because of this I just started considering a new mattress. I am hoping to find some sort of 7 - 10 year performance guarantee, but I am very doubtful that a company will offer the language I am interested in for that long a period.

Trust me... I know exactly what you mean when it comes to a performance guarantee. This is one of the reasons we're looking at a memory foam mattress. They seem to have a better warranty than an equivalent innerspring mattress.

I'm also considering buying the absolute _firmest_ non-lush, non-pillowtop innerspring mattress I can find - we're talking the firmness of a plank or concrete- and then buying a very high quality, appropriately thick topper. That way, the springs will last a very long time and I'd simply replace the topper as necessary.

This is the method used by Duxiana with the Dux bed. They sell a mattress with incredibly sturdy springs and then you buy the topper of your choice to use with it. As the topper ages and degrades, you replace the topper. I learned then when looking at mattress in 2008/2009.

My wife isn't keen on the idea. But, don't think it hasn't crossed my mind.

Our local store has firmness like you want except it is in a twin mattress sold to hospitals.

The springs along the edge of our mattress are nice and stiff, or possibly there are twice as many as the rest of the mattress. I wish the entire mattress had the same spring design.

I am surprised that you are going back to simmons since they wouldnt work with you, not even a discount?

If you want something that firm, why not just go with a platform bed?

Then skip the mattress and just get the topper. You would save a ton of money that way.

Thanks for the info about Bed in a Box. They are out of our price range. Between the cost of the foundation and mattress, the equivalent Bed In a Box model is nearly $1000.00 more than the price as the Simmons.

No. Simmons and Serta are owned by Advent International. Sealy is owned by Temper-Pedic. Simmons makes its own mattresses and those for the W and Westin hotels. Serta makes its own mattresses and produces them for various hotels. Not sure what other brands are owned/made by Advent International. Sealy makes Sealy, Sealy Posturepedic, Stearns and Foster and Optimum mattresses. I've no doubt each of these brands make mattresses for other companies, too.

And, worse, each company sells nearly identical mattresses under different names at different stores. So, it's _very_ difficult to comparison shop. I brought my ipad with me. After my wife and I found a mattress we liked, we checked out the specs so we could better compare it to others we liked at a different store. It was time consuming and annoying. That and the difference in price for nearly identical mattresses can be tremendous!
