Just wondering if Larry or an Admin can shed some light on the banned word issue here on the MRF.
It seems that a new word censor was put into effect about the same time as Larry started talking about how there were problems with the forum and how the Political Ranting forum didn't have a "sponsor," and that we needed to play nice.
Is that what prompted the implementation of the censoring?
Can anyone take a look at the list of what is banned and see if there are words that perhaps shouldn't be banned? It seems like it's a bit over zealous in its censoring at times.
Or is it just easier to paint with a broad stroke, and then address problems when they crop up.
I wasn't aware that the use of profanity had become such a problem that censoring was necessary. Had it?
Thanks, Larry and crew for all you do to make our forum what it is. I am truly appreciative, and am just asking the above because the censoring seems to have been implemented without any clear explanation of why, and it seems like it might be doing a bit *too* good of a job.

when the time you speak of happened I was one of the few who took up the offer to view the list. I made my suggestions. some seem to have been implemented - some not. it is a really broad list that to me went further than it needs to for this forum.

It's probably a commercially provided service. Most of us have developed creative ways around it. Not a big deal , more entertaining than anything else.
Still doesn't ban VTPKL , which is the NASTIEST word of all !!!

Hi,
It is a list that was made available freely, and sent to anyone that asked for it. Honestly, it's only a couple times a month that the words are being reported, and quickly addressed. This is a family-friendly forum and circumvention of banned words should PLEASE be your last resort. A quick report of the post will get eyes on it and it WILL be addressed.
Thank you-

I've found a very effective solution, when you see a post that has a censored word, first click on the "Quote" button and you can then see what the uncensored word was.
It you think that post is a very good example of a context in which that word should not be censored, then click on the "Report" button, and write a polite message to the Admins asking them to consider adjusting the list to allow that word. I think having an example of everyday usage in context is a great way to make an argument that it shouldn't be censored.
I've done this several times (and earlier today), and in all cases the list was adjusted, and it was done relatively quickly. I think reporting it like that is a much more effective way to address it than starting discussions and new threads about a single word.
I really appreciate how the admin has been very reasonable and responsive to these reports.
To me, reporting on a case by case basis seems more effective than trying to review the entire list and make arguments about each word. I'm glad that the admins have been willing to accommodate these requests.

Oh, as far as 'bypassing' I meant using acceptable verbiage to imply the same concept. Like VTPKL or "Male Bovine Feces". All family friendly and rather amusing.
As I readily explain to my children - "Using slang and obscenity doesn't show that you're mature and intelligent. It shows quite the opposite - that you're a poor communicator, and quite juvenile."

Exactly! Never use a bad word unless the other person really has it coming to them.
Or something like that.
