I mentioned in passing that I was not impressed with my LifeProof for 4S. It came from the store with a small "whorl" in the plastic screen...it looks like the plastic was stretched or deformed somehow in the manufacturing process. You can see it if you hold the case at an angle and it looks like oil on water.
Then, a few months ago, a corner of the case chipped open. Don't know how since the phone is always in a pocket or on a desk. No big deal so I duct taped it.
Now, a good inch of plastic is falling away at the spot where your left thumb sits below the controls.
This is terrible for a case that is less than two years old!
Going to buy an Otterbox later today, methinks.

I don't know if you're interested in alternatives, but I got one of
these for my iPhone 4s and am very happy with it. I didn't want to spend $20+ on a case, and this one had great reviews, so for $10 I grabbed one. I also have a slimmer Moshi case, but this Acase will definitely protect it more than the Moshi will.

Might also check out iSkin Revo. I've used this case on two iPhones since '07 and it's a little more sleek than Otterbox and has imho unrivaled protection and durability.

On my second LifeProof (iPhone 4, now iPhone 5,) and have no complaints.

Just get one of
these and you're done. Will never go back to more expensive (or cheaper) cases again.

Ok, am going to look at the alternatives...want something that is at least water resistant if not waterproof.

Where did you buy your LifeProof case from? Kind of sounds like the quality you would expect from a knockoff.

My wife bought it from one of the major electronics retailers here in Singapore. From looking at the pics (thanks btfc!), of the case such as the screw and profile shot, the one I have is real.

Iron,
Lots of viable replacements... Otterbox Defender, Griffin Survivor, a model from Lunatik, and a slew of others. I have a TakTik Extreme from Lunatik for my IPhone 4S. Love it! But, it's expensive. Very expensive.
