Code that shuts down iPhone hoses Messages
#1
Jackass friend texted me "the code" that can force your phone to shut down. See story here: http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/26/ios-messages-crash-bug/

Rebooted and now Messages crashes every time I try to open it.

In the process of restoring from a backup from last week.

So, if you were thinking about sending this as a joke, don't as it is can be a pain in the rear....

Sounds like this could be fairly easily fixed if your jackass friend would send you another text, so you could open Messages and delete the first text.

These tips might save you from doing a restore.

Jackass friend

You're too kind. Seems to me a friend would send you another text to fix this, as soon as he knew you got it. But then maybe a friend would never have done this in the first place.

You could send yourself a text via Messages from a Mac with Yosemite, maybe an earlier OS?

Agreed:

Plus: I don't think I would consider him a "friend" any more if he pulled a stunt like that and I surely would not mind telling him that thought either.

Possibly, on the former. Definitely on the latter.

Additional workarounds:

Ask Siri to "read unread messages."

Use Siri to reply to the malicious message. After you reply, you'll be able to open Messages again.

In Messages, swipe left to delete the entire thread. Or tap and hold the malicious message, tap More, and delete the message from the thread.

Apple will fix this in an update.

So I restored it, Messages still crashes. Did the Siri work around and Messages will open to the latest conversation, but if you try get to another message from another person, it crashes again. Very annoying.
