Recent MBPs and Thermal Paste
#31
One thing that saw no mention of is what does Activity Monitor show for the CPU Usage on this MBP? If it's pegged at 100% per core all the time, then it would make sense that it's really hot? And if that's the case, figure out why it's pegged.

I don't get where you read that. I said at least two to three months. It could have gradually been building up as an issue.

*Could* have.

Thats kind of the issue Im having with the whole "its thermal paste" diagnosis. Or even trying to guess in this post.

There arent enough facts to go on and as far as I can tell from whats been said, the only thing you have tried is running iStat.

You ruled out dust, even though your dont really *know* if theres dust inside.

Software hanging was dismissed, even tho you havent tried anything to trouble shoot that.

The thermal paste article you posted to the guy bragged about his CPU not going over 80C. But earlier you siad yours was at 71 and 72? thats way cooler than his?

Activity Monitor shows nothing as high as 100% although I have seen it go as high as that but I don't recall if that was related to the heating issue.

Again, I don't know where you read that it was a sudden issue. It could have and it could not have been a sudden issue.

Second, I have run iStat and Macs Fan Control. They both say the same thing but that's probably because they are taking the reading off the motherboard. What else do you want me to run?

Third, yes, I do rule out dust but that's because I have been in this machine quite a few times. Dust has never been an issue. I do spray the specks that I find. That bottle of canned air has been around for years! To make you happy, I will go into this machine later and spray like crazy.

Fourth, I have yet to create a new user as you suggested but I don't think that that will do much. Will try, though.

Fifth, the temperature is cooler on my MBP because I have placed it on top of a Cooler Master laptop stand equipped with two large fans. Without it, the internal fans will go to 6000 very quickly.

Why don't I do this...I will unplug the laptop cooler and come back to you on this. 11:30 at this moment and CPU temp at 66 Celsius.

Ok, half an hour later:

CPU 69 Celsius
Fans at 4100

Well, certainly not what I had expected and not what I have experienced in the past.

Ok, going to rip into the machine later on and check on the dust situation.

Are you running Safari? Safari kicks up my fans on my 2011 MBP, which always happens with Flash. When will Flash die speedy death?

My MBP right now is at CPU 114*F and fan speed is 2000 rpm.

Do you have automatic graphics switching checked in the Energy Saver preferences? So that you are using the Intel on board graphics card?

When I use my Radeon Graphics card, the laptop heats up (200*F) and then the fans kick on.

On the older MacBook models still kicking around here (two 2007 and one 2008 model) any serious use of Safari kicks on the fans. Two of the three do not have Flash installed.

And this is where Im going with this. We all want to help. But its just too vague. And it doesnt run some freebie software aint enough to make a diagnosis.

more to the story -- you spray for dust regularly. We dont know that until just you last post... if your first post would have included "I spray regularly for dust..." then know one would have even mentioned it.
