More sad news from my area
#1
Taken from a reptile rescue's website:

Last night, on September 10th, 2006, someone broke into our new director's home.
Mike Daniels' place was vandalized to the point of being "unlivable." The
vandals killed many of the rescued reptiles Mike kept in his home. Among
the dead are a Reticulated Python, a Bearded Dragon, 2 Burmese Pythons,
2 Western Diamondback Rattlesnakes, 2 Gray-Banded Kingsnakes, and others. So
far 4 snakes have survived the attack, although our 10 foot albino Burmese
Python, Gloria, is in critical condition with multiple stab wounds. We do not
know if she will survive, although we are sincerely hoping.

The killers (there had to be more than one) used several knives, a fireplace poker
and at least 2 frying pans to beat the animals to death. They hit the animals
so hard that they broke off the handles of both frying pans. They also injured
several turtles by smashing stones onto their shells. We are all in shock over
this tragedy. What kind of sick, psychotic people could do such a thing to
these poor animals? Some had come to our rescue from abusive/neglective homes.
This has been a devastating blow to our rescue efforts.

The Police have no suspects or motive so far, and crime scene investigators spent
most of the morning lifting fingerprints and cataloging evidence. The only
thing obvious is that there were multiple suspects.

Damages and replacement costs for smashed caging, etc., will run upwards of $6,000
to $7,000. We are in desparate need of donations to help our rescue get back
up and running.

If this had happened to furry animals, the public outrage would be tremendous. But, because snakes aren't fuzzy, this hasn't had much news coverage.

I know Roy quite well & he had to give up his position as director because of his health.

This is so unbelievably sad & horrible. I'd like to beat the perpetrators to death.

Stephanie that is awful and disgusting! I hope they catch those bastards. In cases like this they do get caught fairly often - they can't help boasting about what they've done and word spreads.

I certainly hope they do get caught. The picture of Roy with Gloria is just so sad. I hope she survives. Snakes do suffer when they're injured - just like any animal.

What happened breaks my heart.

BTW, Don Kiyoti - I think I'll be in Las Cruces/Tucson/Phoenix/Flagstaff in about a week & a half!

thats really awful. whoever did it should be removed from the general population. and beaten with a frying pan, a fire place poker and a few knives - so they understood what they were doing.

Poor little (and big) dudes. I don't understand why people do things like that. kj.

If the police are smart, they will stop at nothing to catch the perps. People who harm and torture animals, and kill them like that frequently go on to bigger and far worse things. many notorious murderers tortured and killed animal when they were younger.

Racer X, I agree with you...but you're talking about this happening in a state that just let a guy off the hook for killing his girlfriend's Jack Russell Terrier by beating it to death. Yeah, he went in front of a judge & he got off with probation & nothing else really.

These guys, if caught, will just get a slap on the wrist. Even the fines they could face only total a couple thousand.

They have actually strengthend the animal cruelty laws here in Kansas but there is no punishment to great for someone who does this sort of thing. Killing caged and defenseless animals is an act of a twisted and dangerous mind. I do rescue for birds and the neglect is bad enough, but if this sort of thing happened here I would be totally unhinged.

We will keep them in our thoughts,

That's hideous. Doesn't matter what kind of animal, it's just awful.

When they're caught they should be fed to one of those gigantic south american constrictors. You know... for science... and stuff.
