During the keynote, the speaker (don't know his name) said that "two of the most popular activities in the world are walking and running." He then went on to extoll the virtues of the built-in GPS, segueing into the ViewRanger demo. (I learned than ViewRanger is a separate app that must be purchased.) Afterward, the speaker went on to discuss the special partnership with Nike and the Watch created with RUNNERS in mind. I really like the features described, but...I'm never gonna be a runner. I WALK. So...
Would I benefit from getting the Nike version?

only if you can color coordinate the watch band with your running walking shoes.

more seriously, the built in health app in iOS provides the the basic ( steps and distance ) info on your daily activity and lumps walking and running together. It's just tracking movement. The built in gps and accelerometers / action tools know when you are using your legs to get around.
If you're trying to kick up the pace and want to document it to challenge yourself/whatever, or want maps then you want an app. There are dozens if not hundreds of walking/running/moving apps.
What should be nice about having a gps built into the watch is it should improve distance/pace accuracy and you should be able to leave your iPhone home ( unless you want data stuff - like maps )
If you like the nike watchband and their app then go for it.
I use the free version of walkmeter because walking was what I started out doing. ( trying to get my 10000 steps a day and for knee and back strengthening ) Pace wasn't my objective to begin with, but that has turned into jogging/running two miles a night as often as I can.
Just do it. LOL

a nice article on it.
The app will just consider you a real slow runner. It's not like it won't work.
you might even be able to cycle with it. who knows.
