I've not nearly as many bugs on iOS as I've had on my macs.

So what is discoveryd? Sounds like the few that responded in the comments were glad that it was going away.

This is the new Apple wireless software that is notoriously flaky in many cases. My MBPr had far better wifi under 10.9 than 10.10, and all data points to this change by Apple.

I didn't realize that iOS uses discoveryd, too. This might explain the DNS issues I've had with my iPad Air running iOS 8 that don't exist on my MBP running Mavericks.

discoveryd is not wireless software; rather, it controls most aspects of Mac (and iOS) networking:

Discoveryd was introduced with OS X Yosemite, replacing mDNSResponder for managing Mac networking tasks, but it's led to a host of problems like those listed above along with issues like slow wake from sleep, failures to resolve DNS names, duplicate machine names, and more, as detailed in a post earlier this year by Ars Technica.
