Firewire has had a pretty good run... about 20 years for FW400, and over a dozen for FW800. It, too, has always been more expensive than USB, but Thundercrap, er, TB, is extra expensive to start with, plus requires extra pricey cables, which is probably in part why Fill embraces what you perceive as a negative moniker...
If it were the same price as USB, Fill and others would probably embrace it as Thunderbacon. (I would've gone w/ Thunderchocolate, but w/ Chocolate Thunder's recent passing, it didn't feel right.)

It's been out for four years and I have purchased two devices. I've purchased far more USB devices in that timespan. My purchases were made only because the computer I have was stupidly crippled to not have USB 3.0 (in order to push Thunderbolt). I agree with Filliam. It's probably very good for less than 1% of all users. Just read this forum alone and see all the complaints about the Thunderbolt display. I've seen many complaints with the Thunderbolt to Ethernet adapter as well which I'm lucky to have avoided, but I kept the adapter plugged in all the time (less wear and tear).

I'm not sure how a small user base makes it crap. I, and many I know, are using Thunderbolt.

I've gone from somewhat positive to downright negative on TB. All of my devices get so damned hot. The cable ports get hot. For hard drives, it's no better than USB3, but WAY more expensive. Yes, it can be daisy chained and USB can't, but that just isn't enough to make me happy.

I will change to TB3 if it becomes moderately popular and reasonably priced. Part of the reason is that the powers that be still have not been able to implement it as optical, which was the original reasons Apple heralded it as clearly superior to USB 3.0 and tried to ignore that standard for 2-1/2 years.
I read that one company was expecting the new USB-C cables to have timing chips in both ends, because it will be cheaper than running another conductor in the cable to carry the timing signal. That is really cheap. 4K over USB-C to HDMI 2.0 will be the gold standard. Mac users getting 'Late 2015' Macs might finally be able to buy one of the 39" 4K TV's for $280 and use it as a monitor.

I have 4 Macs I have to sync (2 User accounts each), 3 of which can use TB. I use it for TM, cloned backups, transfers among Macs because I want the jobs done now.
