Sony 32GB Class 10 UHS-1 SDHC up to 70MB/s Memory Card - $10.69 with Amazon Prime - Any Good?
#1
I'm looking for a 32GB card for my SX50 and just saw this card on Amazon going for $10.69 with Prime. I'm not familiar with Sony cards though and whether they are dependable. It looks to be a bit slower than a SanDisk Extreme. I've been very happy with a Wintec Filemate 16 GB Professional Class 10 card which is probably slower in my SX40.

Any thoughts on this Sony card?

What is considered "fast" in this category? I have no clue.

If you go by SanDisk as a yardstick, their Extreme PRO is rated at 95MB/s. Their Extreme Plus has a transfer rate at 80MB/s and their Extreme at45MB/s.

As far as Amazon pricing for the 3 SanDisk cards, all 32 GB:
Extreme PRO - $29.95
Extreme Plus - $29.99
Extreme - $24.95

I grabbed the Sony. It came out to $11.44 with tax.

You get what you pay for. The spec most thrown around is the "70MB/sec" or "95MB/sec" which is a read speed. Which is great, but if you're shooting photos in burst mode and RAW, what you should be concerned with is write speed.

This Sony does not have a great write speed, reported at 20-30MB/sec. That's maybe 2 photos written from buffer to the card in a second. If you have a higher resolution camera, even worse.

The Sandisk Extreme Pro, which are the cream of the crop, can handle 90MB/s write speed.

So if your camera spits out 25MB RAW files, and shoots 11 frames a second, that's 275MB of data generated in one second. With the Sony card you're looking at 14 seconds to clear the buffer and write that data to the card. With the Sandisk you're looking at only 3 seconds.

Having said that the Sony card should be fine for general purpose photography and is an incredible value, just don't expect to push it to the limits of a modern camera.

DRR, thanks for the explanation. as you mentioned I think it will be fine for casual shooting with the SX50. SanDisk recommends the Extreme Plus or the Extreme for the SX50. They don't bother to recommend the Pro. I think this will be fine until I see a Plus sale.

DRR, thanks for the explanation.

Ditto!

I'll keep that in mind.

I've got a few older SanDisk 16G cards, and I'm sure they're not particularly fast. I'll watch for a deal on the Extreme Pro, as I'd like to have at least one fast card.

s-t, don't let me down!

What about for shooting video?

The Extreme Pro comes in UHS I and USH II, the latter with an "up to" 250MB write speed.

Is it overkill for the SX50?

The top card they recommend is:

SanDisk Extreme® PLUS SDXC™ UHS-I card_64GB
SDSDXS-064G-A46

The suggested cards are here:
