A couple more vintage Elgins added to the collection
#1
Before you think I'm totally crazy, I sold off about 15 watches in the last month or so....

So here's a couple new ones I bought.

1955 Elgin Surf-love the dial on this one

Early 60's Lord Elgin Thin Thin-has the American made/designed 760 automatic movement in it.

1954 Elgin Windsor

1957 Lord Elgin Glencove-Elgin described this as part of their Niteglo series, where the back of the hands were coated with radium, resulting in the hands throwing off a soft glow on the dial.

Most of the original dials get radium burn, so I bought a NOS dial, lumed the hour markers and put lume on the back of the hands. At night, it lights up rather nicely--probably not at bright at radium, but the hands do lightly illuminate the dial.

Ooh - self-winding.
I have to wind my Elgin manually (it's from 1924 - I don't think self-winding mechanisms were on the market yet), but - thankfully - only once per week.

I'm still trying to find an appropriate strap for it...

Neat. The '60s "Lord Elgin Thin Thin" is to my eye the most elegant.

Impelled me to look up the Wikipedia history of the Elgin Watch Co., which was a going concern until it folded in 1968. They don't say what happened. But they do say that none of the subsequent 'Elgin'-branded watches bear any relationship to those produced by the Elgin Watch Co.:

Ohhhh, those are nice, Grump! I have a weakness for those old watches, but due to fibromyalgia, I canno' wear anything on arms, wrists. And, I was taught that men only use pocket watches and wear boxers. I'm a man.:oldfogey:

What does "radium burn" look like? Sounds disastrous!
