Any Mazda CX-5 owners here?

I'm interested in this topic, also. Looking at getting an SUV and I've narrowed the choices down to a CX-5 and a Subaru Outback.

after my latest Mazda debacle, under 80K on my wifes Mazda 3 -- clutch service now up to $2000 -- $1300 + $400 flywheel + $200 in some belts -- no more mazdas ever.

Fun to drive, but not loving the long term.

I would never own a slowbaru for the same reasons, they just cant shake their reliabilty in my mind -- but I suppose if I lived in the snow I might rethink it.

If you can rent one for a short holiday and get a better idea than the usual dealer drive, it will give you a feel of the vehicle.
I think the manual tranny in passenger cars is a thing not needed. Even my '04 Mazda will shift manually by moving the stick to the left and act like a manual shifter much faster than using a clutch. Race cars use paddle shifters and automatic tranys. Automatic transmissions are generally electrically operated today.

We've been researching SUVs as well, but keep coming back 'round to Hyundai. We have five in our extended family--the oldest is 2001--and they've been extremely reliable with low maintenance. We're looking at the other makes, Mazda included, but still favor the Hyundais.

My wife got a CX-5 last Fall and so far, so good. She picked one off the lot and I wish I had been more involved (I was very busy and wasn't around much while she was looking). She got a Grand Touring but it doesn't have a remote opening rear hatch or a couple other amenities that should be standard on a top of the line model. But, we've just been used to remote opening doors and now that we have to open lift gates by hand we feel spoiled!
That said, it is a very nice car. Comfortable, moves well for a 4 banger (2.5L), quiet, and we got 30mpg on some long distance trips. No complaints so far.

Cant compare the automated manual in a race car to what you can buy in the store. Those transmission are awesome on a race track where they have been programmed for that specific track. Try driving a 458 with one of those around town and it's clunky and frustrating. A true manual make driving more engaging, more enjoyable for those who like driving. Try feathering the clutch into turn, or hold a gear because you know your going to be slowing back down in just a moment. With todays smaller displacement engines, precise transmission control can really make a difference in how the car responds. I find this less important in larger displacement cars, for example a Cadillac CTS-V. The 6.2L V8 has enough power over a wide enough RPM range that gear selection is not so critical, but in a turbocharged 4 cyl, it can take a lot of time to wait for the transmission to drop 2 or 3 gears while trying to get into boost.

I would generally agree Hyundai's have great quality - except for the 470,000 2011 and 2012 Sonata's that were recalled for engine failure - to replace the engine. According to Consumer Reports

These same engines, built at the same manufacturing plant, were also used in Hyundai Santa Fe SUVs, Kia Optima sedans, and Kia Sorento SUVs assembled in West Point, Georgia. According to Kia spokesperson Jame Hope, Kia is not impacted by this recall.

I wouldn't dismiss Mazda based on your experience. Mazdas are generally very good, reliable vehicles. The Mazda 3 (and its predecessors) have been auto mag favorites a and recommendations for years. Same goes for the 6 series. That's not even taking into consideration my '09 CX-7 which has been trouble-free despite being considered less reliable than Mazda sedans and hatchbacks.
