Men's blazer question
#1
I'm looking for a jacket to have on hand for more formal occasions, having not owned anything but an old thrift-store wide-wale corduroy one for decades. Anyway, I was always tempted by Duluth Trading's old micro-fleece option, but then they discontinued it. I've looked at their 'fire hose presentation jacket' model, but I'm not a big fan of that heavy cotton canvas.

Have any of you found a nice 'modern' men's blazer/sport coat option lately? I like the idea of micro-fleece, but it's not mandatory. Lots of pockets would be nice too (a definite advantage of the Duluth Fire Hose model). Oh, and seeing as this is the "Tips and Deals" forum, it'd be great if it was on sale too! Confusedmile:

Anyone?

Not sure that I would define micro-fleece as being a more formal blazer. I would stick to a more traditional fabric. Might want to go to Joseph A Bank when they have them on sale.

Go back to the thrift store and look for a newer version.

I meant wearing a blazer at all would be more formal. As it is, if I have to attend something dressy, I tend to just wear a vest, of which I have several. I'm definitely looking for a blazer that's not going to be totally traditional. No navy for me!

Great suggestion Ombligo, and that is in fact what I do from time to time. Just haven't found the right one yet!

Blazers are "dress casual" wear. They're pretty niche these days. If you have the choice, it's almost always better to wear a suit. The notable exceptions being lunch at the clubhouse and teachers dragged against their will to fundraisers.

Micro fleece and heavy wool sport coats are even more niche. Sport coats are for recreation. The origin is from hunting-clubs. Outside of the use in sports/recreation, the only ones I see in sport coats lately are hipsters who wear them with torn jeans and shredded sneakers as some sort of statement on their inability to recognize that a dozen guys dressed identically aren't showing off their individuality.

Why not just look for a good suit? You could wear the jacket as a blazer if you feel the need for one, but still have the suit ready for significant occasions.

Yeah, I get your point, but I'm just not a suit-wearing kind of guy, as I made pretty clear above. I'll probably end up springing for one of those Duluth models I mentioned, or possibly one of the Lands End ones that pipiens mentioned.

Thanks though, I do appreciate everyone's advice!
