For coolnes, nothing beats an old Marantz like in rgG's pic. As old receivers go, they're pretty spendy, but within your budget. My next choice would be Pioneer from the same era.
As I settle into old-manhood, I've decided I must have a 70's receiver with a silver face and lots of knobs and dials an

I picked up a '90s Pioneer SX-312R at GW a couple months back, $7.00. Working fine with no issues, digital tuner, but everything else is analog.

Ok, you guys forced me to go down to the basement and see which model I have. Here is a pic that is exactly like mine. I can't believe that it might be worth almost what I paid for it in 77 or 78.

there are some great vintage receivers, but many of them are overpriced now on the used market, IMO. most of the "vintage" receivers were only average at best, unless you for the top-of-the-line models from certain manufacturers.
for my money (and what I did), buy some old amps, find a nice preamp, and buy modern speakers, as older speakers often needed refoaming or work beyond what they are worth. stereo equipment goes for pennies on the dollar on CL

I have this puppy running my main audio system:
![]() Yamaha CR-1020...top of the line. I have it paired with a Luxman turntable and rebuilt Advent speakers in the living room and KEF ceiling speakers in the kitchen. It sounds fantastic and looks the part too. One thing to be be aware of with these old components is that many of the old capacitors will have failed. They can be replaced, but it is a time-consuming process. Be sure to have yours checked out by a knowledgeable technician, or better yet pay the extra to buy from a vintage audio shop.

My Pioneer SX1000TW has only been in the shop one time since new in 1970 and has been through about ten moves. I have it hooked up to an Airport Express for streaming iTunes and to an older CRT TV for Roku audio. The volume and balance control parts do need cleaning though.
Looks similar to this one... ![]()
