Short answer: can I sync iOS10 device with iTunes in 10.7?
#1
I don't think I've ever been this frustrated with Apple in the last 23 years.

I just want to sync my iPad which means I need a newer version of iTunes. I apparently can't upgrade my machine past 10.7 even thought I just had RAM added. I am not seeing any clear answers about what OS I need to run a new enough version of iTunes for this. I will get Lion and upgrade iTunes as possible, if that helps.. but if not, what is my next option? Other than that "jailbreaking" type thing...

Nope. The version of iTunes required for iOS 10 is 12.5.1 and that version requires Mavericks. Your mini just can't get there. And if you go the hacked kernel route (MacPostFacto), good luck.

.....same here.....you need a certain version to do a certain task but your machines can not be upgraded to that version of software so you are SOL......

......they try to force you to upgrade to have all functions but some people don't have money to burn to buy new computers, etc. to upgrade and you are then stuck not being able to do basic tasks.....very frustrating....

Yep. Well thanks for the clear answer anyway. I'm feeling pretty helpless and am not sure what to do. It's not just the cost of replacing the machine, it's the complicated way I have this set up that I like. I'm not sure I could duplicate it exactly. Plus I just had RAM added.

My mom and my husband have slightly newer Minis but maybe not new or powerful enough to run Mavs. I might try to swap but I'm not looking forward to all of the iTunes and iPhoto trading and such. Neither of them uses their computer to sync anything so far... my husband doesn't have any modern iOS device at all and my mom never syncs her iPad.

I can, but I can't swap out music or get photos from my camera. I thought about that.

This is why I try to warn people about buying new iOS devices when they have older Macs.

It's not a new iPad, but it did get updated. I knew I'd eventually need it and I thought wouldn't stop bugging me to upgrade, but I would have held it off if I'd known it would keep me from syncing again.

Well, if you are not going to be moving files around a lot, setting up your own external drive to connect with someone else's more modern mini to do your syncing is a lot cheaper than getting a new computer of your own. Just set it up with a recent OS and iTunes and your songs and photos. Of course, you have to promise not to screw up the other person's files on their hard drive(s).

I thought of this and still might, but I am not thrilled about taking my external hard drive (where my iTunes library is housed) and add and remove it from the other machines. I would only be syncing maybe every other month, though.
