I usually get regular Wranglers, Levis 505 and Rustlers one size bigger. Most other jeans have problems, like the zipper being too high, or the pockets being weird. They're too expensive anymore to get something that doesn't work. And we have an outlet store.

Dennis,
You buy Duluths from the Duluth Trading web site. They have an amazing return policy in the event fit is an issue.

Look at Gap stuff too. I'm on their email list and they have sales all the time on jeans that hold up well over time. And some aren't made in China!

I typically buy $9.99 Wrangler seconds at the VF outlet; $5.00 Rustler seconds for working in the yard. I really like the Wranglers but like the OP mentioned there seems to be hundreds of cuts, colors and washes. My best fitting jeans are a pair of Old Navy my SO gave me for Christmas--I would have never thought to buy jeans there.

Uniqlo has good stuff similar to what you're looking for.

Dickies are also cheap and reasonably well made. If you buy a size larger than you need, you can brag about having a large dickie too.

Eddie Bauer jeans are pretty nice and they're often on sale for a fraction of the cost of Levis.
One thing I really don't get is the button fly thing. Is it purely a nostalgia thing? I tried some 501s for a while but found the button fly to be ridiculously cumbersome. There's a reason the zipper was invented.
