Davester,
I never understood it either. Seemed pointless and cumbersome to me. That's why I tried 501s on at the store and immediately decided to choose a different model. The other issue with Levi jeans is they are expensive and not particularly better than other brands. Maybe the fit is a touch better than, say, cheapies from Wrangler but not enough of an improvement to justify the price. Same goes for most other name brands, i.e. Gap, Lee, CK, etc.

The best wearing and fitting jeans I've had were Member's Mark from Sam's. They're the ones I'm replacing now. The jeans at Sam's now look pretty lousy, plus they have short pockets. I hate short pockets.
The worst quality jeans I ever had were from L L Bean in the 90's.
I'm going to give the Wranglers a shot since they're $17 and I can try them on at Target.

Dennis,
Seriously. Check out Duluth Jeans. If you like long pockets, then you'll love them all the more.

Please report back about this. I'd like to know which style/mdl fits most like a regular (old) pair of Levis.
I tend to avoid clothes shopping like the plague, and a few months ago when in pretty dire need of a new pair of pants, I ducked into a clothing store (on the way to get groceries in the same center) and bought a pair of Levis on sale in my size, as fast as I could. They seemed to fit, and everything was fine, ... Until... I washed them the next day, and walked around a little in them. Within a few minutes the things were down somewhere near my knees. For real. Seems they put some awful stretch stuff in some of the fabric in this model (maybe just in the waistband?). So there is no way to wear them without a belt. Terrible.

Hey now, I have seen at least 2 different female construction workers, and 3 painters well worthy of watching. Especially in painter's pants and a torn T-shirt.
