Someone apparently never viewed an entire episode of the the original Star Trek.

Maybe this Discovery crew is caught up in some type of time warp, but the kind of equipment shown on that vessel NEVER appeared on NCC-1701

I believe Discovery is supposed to take place after TOS and before TNG. Of course, the tech looks more advanced than TNG also, but you have to give them some creative license based on when TNG was made and what seemed futuristic at the time. To handcuff a series based on what seemed futuristic in the 80's compared to now would make the show feel very dated.

10 years before TOS.

I agree that the advanced tech has problems, in particular the extent to which the computer can both control portions of the ship without direction and make autonomous decisions about the life of crewmembers; transporter technology is too fast, too accurate and works at too great a distance for authenticity; force-shield tech that good wasn't even available in TNG... They're taking shortcuts to move the story rapidly forward, embracing action sequences and throwing away good opportunities for character development that come from authentic-feeling problem-solving.

The main character bugs me. The actress is good, but the character is a mess. Her every decision stems from a maelstrom of emotions, but the captain keeps saying she's cold and logical. She's got a telepathic connection to Sarek due to a (illegal) mind-meld from when she was a kid, but doesn't bear the much-ballyhooed consequences of a mind-meld (absorbing the memories and personality of the other party). They're twisting a lot of stuff to put her into a redemption-arc and at the same time they've provided her with a deus-ex-machina to absolve her of responsibility for her actions.

All episodes are quarantined except for the first to an online subscription? If so, my opinion of it is exactly the same as if it never existed.

It's the internet.. episode 2 was bittorrented about 15 secs after CBS posted it.
Understood, but I've moved on from torrenting files and now value convenience. Or I'll just go do something else. TV, or loss of it, is no biggie for me. For a show I cared about, I could be persuaded to do it the old fashioned way, by tuning in at an exact time each week, AND "put up" with commercials. But even that's not an option here.

CBS got a huge influx of new subscribers because of this new show, but has squandered the one thing all of the Netflixes of world will never have: actual, OTA broadcast ability. It's clear they don't want it. Instead of educating consumers about the value of an antenna, they chose to milk them.
Yep, I won't be paying CBS a dime extra. I already pay them indirectly for cable TV (U-Verse to be more precise) and if they can't sufficiently monetize the show through selling advertising then to hell with them and their show.

Most of the on-demand I have access to has commercials that can't be skipped or fast-forwarded through.
