anyone using a non commercial DIY flea treatment for their outdoor cat ...... successfully?

The cat has fleas or are you trying to prevent the kitty from getting them? Does the kitty come indoors at all?

Have you tried the different types of flea collars, or does that fall under typical "commercial treatment" regimens?

Good luck. Fleas in So Cal are here to stay as in year-round, and one of the Katz here has such severe allergy to the bites that all it takes is one and there's an instant and awful reaction that can take weeks to reverse. Last time we missed a few months, the population grew, the cat got bit, and she licked off half the hair on one side. This is an indoor cat, btw. So these are fleas (or their eggs) that somehow manage to get inside - probably on clothing or shoes. Then humans get fleabit, and it's all over.

So now the outside gets hit with Cyzmic CS and the cat gets Cheristin. Definitely not in the "non-commercial DIY" category, but it works. It's not DDT, but there are some risks involved. In our case, the risk/benefit ratio strongly favors its use here.

I have neighbors that are using a non commercial DIY flea treatment - dropping powder/herbs/spices (I forget what exactly) and vacuuming it up. It is a monumental FAILURE!.

About he only non-commercial treatment that is effective is diatomaceous earth sprinkled onto the areas like carpet that are infested. The sharp edges of the particles abrade the exoskeleton and dehydrate the fleas. It needs to be vacuumed up after a bit, and should not be left where pets and children will get into it.

Confortis prescription for Dogs, is a miracle in most cases. Not sure if for cats, as well.

I'm assuming Advantage works for your kitty. I'd be afraid to change.
