Why are we talking about Christmas already? You’d think there was a big shopping holiday coming up or something .

My Christmas epiphany And I thought this was going to be about Twelfth Night. The start of the Carnival season! Just saw the Atlanta Shakespeare Company's production of Twelfth Night at the Shakespeare Tavern. Why we keep our decorations up through January 6th. LENT is until December 25th. Christmas is December 25th to January 6th. (But don't tell the retailers.) Remember the 12 days of Christmas? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epiphany_(holiday)

The worst offenders of useless plastic toys and playsets are childless aunts and uncles. God bless them, they try so hard with the children gifts at Christmas and Birthdays. I've found the best gifts for first graders and up are gift cards to Target and Barnes&Noble. At 6/7yo, kids know the value of a gift card. A young toddler, not so much. If you must buy them physical gifts make it an "active" toy. Like sports ball, scooter, stomp rocket, etc. I cringe when i see remote control anything.

I have to defend some of these plastic toys. Someone (I think my sister-in-law) got my daughter a walking dancing dachsund https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tzoDklaKcDE for Christmas when she was about 5 or 6. That toy was set aside after the novelty wore off, but was never discarded, but then was rediscovered when doing some house cleaning. We inserted new batteries and not only my now older daughter, but the whole family got a kick out of it. Every so often, it comes out from storage, and, even though the cuteness eventually wears off, it still provides a moment of pleasure. We decided not to get rid of it because of that, so even though it sits in a closet somewhere, when it does get rediscovered, it's as much fun as it was when she first got it. It will probably be given to her child when that time will come.
