speaking about audiophile equipment. One of our vendors, a high end CNC machining/assembly company got a contract to make turntables. The prototype is a large cylinder on air bearing, suspended on some stainless steel blocks. the whole assembly was several hundred pounds (more like 700 lb IIRC). These go to a company that assembles high end turntables and sells those for $150k a piece. I asked who buys this kind of equipment, and he was told that most customers are in Asia. They make like 40-50 units per year.

I don;t see myself even spending $10 k on a CD player, unless the US switches to the Yen or something, but I did spend $1,200 on a tube based CD player and enjoy it. Sounds quality is much nicer then typical $199 BluRay players, although the last BluRay players are getting much better with 2 channel audio. Not sure I would spend that today, but about 7 or 8 years ago it was worth it.

But it's clearly 'HD' CD sound...!

To Rega's credit, they also offer the highly-acclaimed Apollo-R CD player for $1095:

For $10k it should have a Bentley® hand carved English Walnut case.

"Frequency Response 30Hz - 20KHz +/-0.5dB" only? For that much $ I would expect it could reproduce the entire range that a CD could contain!

What bothers you? Low end or high end?

As far as I am aware, CDs can contain 20Hz - 20kHz, and the super fancy expensive CD player can only reproduce from 30Hz and up. That leaves off the low end.
Sure, most people don't have a sub that could even reproduce that well enough to bother, but I imagine that anyone willing to spend $10K on a CD player would. Is there some simple explanation why it can't? Are all CD players limited in this regard, and this particular one is just truthful about it? |
