January 11, 2005: Steve Jobs introduces the world to iPod shuffle, an entry-level music player that lacks a display. The device randomly shuffles the audio files it holds, but lets users easily skip songs they don’t like.
The first iPod to use flash memory, the iPod shuffle plugs directly into a computer using onboard USB 2.0 and comes in 512MB and 1GB configurations. Oh, and it’s smaller than a pack of gum — and weighs less than an ounce!

Wow. Apple sure went a long way from the shuffle to the iPhone in 2.5 years...

mine's still working and holds a charge...although I haven't tried to see how long the battery lasts.

Mine that Steve Jobs gave me at Macworld still works. Ok, he didn’t directly hand it to me but it was under my seat at Macworld.

I got one cheap back when Apple Stores used to sell refurbed items. When they stopped, the local store clearanced out a bunch of stuff really cheap. I got the 1GB shuffle, an iPod Nano, and a 30GB classic (color screen). Sold the shuffle to someone at work... I still see it on her lanyard. The classic, I still have. I've toyed with the idea of doing the upgrade where you put a microSD card in it, but there are issues with the screen.
The nano was the best buy. A few years after buying it, Apple announced a recall, and mine was one of them. They sent a pre-paid shipping box, and in return for the 1GB nano, the sent me a brand new 8GB nano! I still use it for when I take walks, and when I am on an airplane.

It was my son's first iPod, he would have been around 9 or 10. I know it was a refurb though (dad is cheap frugal)
