Milwaukee police sources told CBS 2’s Terry that the gunman was fired earlier in the day. He returned and started shooting with a silenced gun, police sources said.

3 brewery presidents walk into a bar. One from Corona, Coors and Guinness.
The president from Corona says to the bartender, "Give me a Corona, the best Mexico has to offer" and the bartender hands him one.
Next, the Coors president orders a Coors saying "Hand me the only beer in the world made with water fresh from the Colorado Rockies."
Then the Guinness president walks up to the bar and orders a Coca Cola. The bartender, a bit taken aback, hands him what he orders.
The other brewery presidents turn to him and say, "Why didn't you order a Guinness?" He replies, "Well, i figured if you guys weren't ordering beers, why should I?"

For the record, I can not emphasize this enough. A "silencer" does NOT make the rifle or pistol silent. It drops the volume about 30dB ish. That is far from silent if you start it 150 dB. Secondly, they can be owned legally simply by applying for the $200 tax stamp, and waiting about 6-8 months for approval and background check.
Many people use them safely, legally and responsibly at shooting ranges to lessen the noise for those who live nearby, or while hunting to protect their hearing, or anyone else they are hunting with.
Now that you all know what the news outlets won't print, because it doesn't further their own agenda, yes, it really sucks.

Thank you for that information. I'm sure I'll need to school somebody and this will come in handy.

For the record, having had the opportunity to demo some suppressed weapons, long and short, while not silent, some come damn close.
There are several factors to consider, but none of them add anything to this thread, same as freerad's post.
I think it obvious the mention of the firearm using the silencer goes to underscore the intent of the killer. Reading into the limited information as little as possible, it would appear the killer wanted to do as much damage as possible while doing as little as possible to alert as few as possible to the threat.
To that end, the news outlets report a story. Whether or not it furthers an agenda, the mention of 'silent' paints a clearer picture.
It's no different than other stories including a mention of several firearms, and/or large quantities of ammo, also found on the shooter's person.
Regardless of any of the above, it's a tragedy.

I shot a suppressed .22LR rifle. The click of the trigger pin was louder than the report from the muzzle. My air rifles are quieter still.

Yes, in any situation where a gunner uses a suppressor, the above information, however inaccurate, should be included so no agenda is furthered.

In almost every other country in the world where guns can be owned...supressors are legal, often encouraged even. The law that regulated supressors in the US was grossly over reaching and misguided.
