Jane Pierce was a manic depressive. She and her family frequently (and publicly) berated Franklin Pierce for his heathen/worldly work in politics. When her son died, she lost her mind and spent her days locked away in her rooms, writing letters to her dead son.

Louisa Adams was another manic depressive, and was always either ill or imagining that she was ill. At her best, she was highly neurotic, prone to hysterics and a hypochondriac.
