Oddly enough, even though the Union won the war, the scholars who wrote the histories were from the South. It wasn't until the last decade or two that a more thorough and far less biased history came to light.

For example. Post War graft and collusion were rampant in the government, but Grant wasn't part of it. He was too innocent to be guilty, so to speak. Being on the take and trading favors was a foreign concept to him and his upbringing.
