Leahy is hospitalized
#1
Not long after being sworn in to preside over the Senate impeachment trial, Leahy has been hospitalized "for observation" out of abundance of caution because he "was not feeling well," his office says in a statement.

My husband and I were both saying that as we watched. He sounded like he was going to keel over.

Sorry for sounding so politically calculating about this but if Leahy were to die, if I understand it correctly, the governor - who is a Republican - would call for a special election that has to take place within six months of the vacancy and can name a temporary replacement person in the interim. If so, that would probably be really bad for Democrats wouldn't it? As in could they lose their Senate majority - at least temporarily?

Correct, and it's a risk built up from a system that rewards the same old people being re-elected.

Do we know what's wrong with him now?

Nope, but he is home and apparently OK: https://thehill.com/homenews/senate/5359...e-hospital

... I would think they wouldn't release him and let him go home if any of his test results had been abnormal.
