Have a friend that is ordering a new Apple Watch from Apple.
She asked my what my thoughts were on getting the Cellular version.
She ended up thinking that she would always have her iPhone with her, so why get the cellular version.
What are we missing?
Thanks

If you are an active runner, climber, skier, biker etc. it can be convenient to not have to carry a phone.
You may still want the ability to call someone in an emergency.

There is also an extra fee for a watch plan, $10/mo or more.

i purchased a cellular AW4 but turned it off after a few months. I realized it was costing me $15 a month more with taxes and fees yet i always had my phone with me. It was nice at a conference to go to an event without the phone but it really churns through the battery when the phone isn't nearby.
turned it off almost two years ago. don't miss it at all for my needs. btw, you can use Apple Pay without the phone being with you which was handy for the two times i found myself at Aldi without my phone.

Ultimately coverage depends on location. We got my mother a cellular watch for fall detection because she doesn’t always have her phone with her when she’s working on the farm. The watch was an easier sell. Now if she would just stop knocking it into stuff and panicking my sisters...

We went with cellular for my wife since she often goes on a dog walk etc without her iPhone.
But honestly, it has been underused.

I go walking phone less since I got my AW Cellular. 2-3 times a week!
In the summer, all I've got is my Watch and BT Buds. Reminds me of the iPod shuffle days, but not out contact.

While I like the idea of always having some cellular capability, as I occasionally leave home without my 'Phone, it would have only occasional use, and I can't see paying $15/mo for the just in case.
I'd pay $5/mo plus taxs, maybe.
I thought about getting cellular and not getting a plan, hoping it could make a 9-1-1 call without one, just like a 'Phone.
Maybe next time.

My daughter chose to get it as she rows and doesn't want to take her phone with her on the rowing shell. if something happens, she can get a hold of someone and not worry about her iPhone sinking to the bottom of a lake or river.
