We've been with Sprint for quite a while, happy with the rates and service. Since the merger, we were told to go into a local store to get new sims. I went in and got mine a few days ago, easy peasy. Tonight we went in to get my husbands switched out and it was a whole different scenario. Before, I gave them my phone, my phone number and my sprint password. Tonight they asked for ID (that was ok) but then they asked for my Apple ID and password. I asked why would they need that? They said it was "sometimes" required. I said lets go ahead without it and we'll see what happens. Well, sure enough, it was never needed, but it just gave me a creepy feeling. Two youngish guys in the store, why on earth would they ask for my Apple ID and password?
Felt creepy to me, but maybe I'm just paranoid in my old age.

Definitely not normal.
I’d follow up with the provider and/or the store (if you can find someone trustworthy to deal with).

You probably just looked helpless and they were thinking ahead to the NEXT problem after the SIM card.

You SHOULD report it.
I just had some joker try to order 2 iPhones on my Sprint/T-Mobile account. Plus, a hella high charge was placed on my credit card, one that was stored on Sprint's site for forever. It was HELL to fix it. Sprint claimed I owed them $2000 on top of my bill.
They told me if I didn't "e-sign" for the phones It would all be cancelled. BUT THEY SENT THE PHONES TO THE FUKKER ANYWAY!!!. I had to call UPS and tell them not to deliver the phones and send them back to Sprint. When I called my bank to cancel the card, there were already charges for effin Doordash, some of them over $100 dollars!!!
After I cussed everybody out, my money was restored to my bank. But Sprint still thinks I owe them $300 more than I actually owe them. I'm working on that now. This is why I fought so hard against this merger.
I'll never store payment info on a site again. Spending my money like they earned it.

There is no consider– only do.
What I would have done, after the phone was up and running, was casually start a video, and ask the guy "Ok, why did you need my Apple ID and password?", then report it, with video.
Good that you trusted your spidey-sense!
There's no telling how many times this has happened with these guy, and who may have payed a steep price for trusting them.
And change your Sprint password.
They should have just installed the SIM for you and let you take care of the Sprint password stuff.
You really should report it.

I'd call the place in mid afternoon on a weekday and ask to speak to the manager and tell him/her what happened as well as the reason why it's huge deal that the guy did that--he was asking for access to your Apple account for no reason and could have taken over the account himself--just in case the manager is a doofus. Then I'd also find a way to report it to TMobile corporate.
When we ported over to TMobile and got new 12's at a store, my wife did have to log into her Apple account as the phones were being changed. They handed her either the old one or the new one (I forget which) and asked her to log in so she did (with an irritated sigh because it happens too often for her!). Mine ported over and got a new 12 without having to log in. Don't have any idea why there was a difference.

We didn't have that problem BUT I have NOT been happy with TMobile's sales staff at our local store. What they represented and what happened didn't add up. It took the other half going in and basically handing the bimbo sales rep her ass before things were cleared up by the store manager. And I was snorting fire long distance about it.
FWIW I did not want to switch from ATT - was perfectly happy with the price and service. However, the other half needed a new phone as his old one was dying and TMobile gave more on the trade in credit than Apple did. EXCEPT they don't give the credit in one chunk - it's doled out over the life of the payments on the new phone. SOP I guess.
Beware their "protection" plan - it's more than Apple Care from Apple.
