Let's talk air (AC/heat) filters ...

... anyone here used the electrostatic kind ? I'm thinking about it because I've been buying the Filtrete since forever, and it always just seemed to me like money down the drain (and filters in the landfill)...

Here's what I've been buying: https://www.lowes.com/pd/Filtrete-2-Pack...er/3123837

And here's what I'm maybe thinking of replacing it with:

https://www.amazon.com/ELECTROSTATIC-WAS...00IMODF3A/

or maybe this one: https://www.amazon.com/Home-Reusable-Fur...07PLLJ6RS/

... anyone have experience with these? Hard to clean? Unforeseen problems? etc.

If you lived close enough to swing by my place I have a brand new one that I never used that you could have for the taking. Also includes a bottle of cleaner. Replaced my HVAC before getting it installed and my new AC has a fancy one built in.

Between a golden retriever and a corgi, our filter collects handfuls of dog hair. I really want a fresh start when I replace the filter. So we go with disposable ones.

I use an Air-Care 24"x24" Gold Electrostatic filter. I don't know if I cleaned it incorrectly or it is just getting old. But I cant get it clean enough to hold up to the sun, and not see all of the dark areas. I don't know if that is dirt or if I didn't vacuum out the dirt before I sprayed a weak solution of kitchen dish soap on it to clean.

$50 for a new Electrostatic. And I never bought the $24.99 cleaner CEF, that Air-Care sells, I see mixed reviews...

Obviously when I sent pictures of my Electrostatic Air Filter to Air Care, she said it should be replaced. But how did it get that way.. I don't know..

Didn't see that they reviewed any of the electrostatic filters, only the regular (non-reusable) type.

Ahh, didn't catch that from your original post, because I didn't click through. Wirecutter's are electrets, not electrostatics. Sorry about that.

When I got a new system this summer, I asked my contractor about electrostatic filters. He said he would sell one to me if I really wanted it. He suggested a 4 inch thick replaceable filter and told me to buy the filters from Amazon, HD or Lowes. Point being, he could have made money selling me the electrostatic and made no money from selling me on just using good replaceable filters. In his opinion, most of the electrostatic filters weren't worth using.
