Seems very outside the norm to me. Most everyone I know who owns a Timbuk2 bag that required repair/replacement under warranty had no issues at all. Even replaced a satchel that was given to me by someone under warranty no questions asked.
Based on that experience I bought several items from them that have held up admirably. Love love love the extra small satchel I bought for my iPad mini. It's been fantastic! Not cheap but well worth every penny. Use it quite a bit.
The REI has a couple of very good deals. I grabbed an ultralight daypack and a bag/satchel. Wouldn't spend more than $50 on the daypack under normal circumstances and would never spend the $100+ it costs at regular price. But, for $37 and change? Why not. Grabbed the messenger satchel to give as a gift. At under $50, it was a sweet deal!
