Recommend me a laptop repair shop! (liquid spill)
#1
Mrs. Anonymouse spilled coffee into her MBP. Worked for a while, then crapped out. Will reboot sometimes after an SMC reset.

So I'm looking for someplace to get it repaired. Bonus points for a shop in the Washington, DC area.

Thanks, y'all!

Well, the one I use is Rossman’s in NYC.

is there some reason you aren't just going to an apple store?

anywhere, repair will be expensive IF feasible...

There's probably 3 ways to fix a liquid damaged laptop:

1. clean and hope. Clean off the affected components with 100% isopropyl alcohol and hope it starts to work and continues to work. Not sure a shop would use this approach, but I've done it as a home remedy.

2. Replace the affected parts (i.e. logic board). Probably the most common and expensive approach, but may not make economical sense since the cost could approach that of a replacement laptop.

3. Component level repair, where they replace only the affected parts on the logic board, which is uncommon and you'd have to find a shop willing and able to do this, and that assumes parts are available for the damaged components.

A half dozen Apple Stores in that region. Can't find one with an open Genius Bar slot?

Or the laptop is just too old?

No AppleCare+ with "incident" coverage?

...An Apple Certified shop will probably tell you that an out of warranty MBP with liquid damage is a "data recovery" job, not a repair.

FWIW...

drawbacks of #s1 & 3 are that the repair may work, but minor corrosion of working components continues and may become major corrosion and may lead to more problems on down the road... #2 is what apple would do

What year MBP? 2015 and earlier have removable SSDs. Might be cheapest to buy a similar used model and swap the SSD. Depending on your backup routine the data may be more valuable to you than the hardware.

Need to know what model/year to determine if it is worth it to fix.

“Mrs. Anonymouse”? How about, the former “Mrs. Anonymouse.” Sometimes you just have to cut your losses.

You should at least get an estimate from Rossmann’s, if only to compare with quotes from Apple and others. Also, they sometimes charge you less than the original quote. And you can ship it to them.
