It’s really sad. The only way these farmers can make it is by underpaying undocumented workers, who (when it comes down to it) have no rights at all.
Another side of the disaster that is US immigration.

It’s broader than immigration. It’s a consumer model enjoying food that’s being subsidized by the child’s death.
But the same group that cries about inflationary lettuce, beef, dairy and “open borders” ignore how they demand these workers exist.
Agriculture in general and small farms in particular are among the least-regulated in the country. You can’t do it without “hurting the farmer!” And that’s exactly the priority … to unfairly subsidize a failed business model that met its doom once larger farms were allowed to become larger.
